Koh Lipe is an island in the very south of Thailand close to the border with Malaysia. The island is part of the Tarutao Marine National Park. This park is a collection of 51 islands, only 7 of them are big ones. Koh Lipe and surrounding islands have excellent diving spots. Besides diving and snorkelling the island is popular for it’s beautiful beaches and relaxed island atmosphere. There are no big hotel complexes and the beaches are not crowded. Approximately only 800 people live on the island permanently. There are a few motorcycle taxis on the island. One of the reasons that Koh Lipe is not overtaken by the mass tourism is the somewhat remote location in the very south of Thailand. The popular Malaysian island Langkawi is only 30 km away from Koh Lipe. Between these islands runs a ferry service. Among backpackers the island is gaining more and more popularity. There is even a camping ground where you can rent tents.
The island can be reached through the city of Trang which has an airport. From here you can take a bus or mini fan to the ferry. Koh Lipe is 22 km offshore from the Pak Bara Pier. Detailed information about how to go from Bangkok to Koh Lipe can be found at www.thailandredcat.com The best time of the year to visit Koh Lipe is between November and March. During the rain season, which usually starts in May, most tourist activities are closed or limited.
